Flinders Chase National Park Visitor’s Centre

The new Flinders Chase Visitor Centre on Kangaroo Island is a spectacular building located at the gateway to one of the states most iconic and remote areas.

Built to replace the former Rocky River centre destroyed in the 2019/20 bushfires the new centre incorporates sustainable design principles and bushfire resistant construction.

Working closely with the architect the wider team the design includes light weight structures, low embodied energy material and passive design principles for lighting, sun-shading, heating and automated natural ventilation driven by local weather station to reduce power usage. The centre also features off-grid water and power systems with rainwater harvesting, storage and filtration systems for potable water supply, non-potable water supply from an on-site dam for toilet flushing and irrigation usage, on site wastewater management, and Hybrid off grid Photo-Voltaic Solar and Battery storage system with generator and grid connected back-up.
